How to pick a vinyl cutter

Vinyl cutters all look about the same on paper. They are not the same.

Take a 30 foot job. One machine cuts it dead straight from end to end. Another one drifts an eighth of an inch off by the time it finishes. Three things cause that difference: the motor, the way the machine grips the material, and whether it can find a printed mark. Width is one of the least important numbers on the list.

Step 1: Find your tier

Cutters come in three groups. Find the column that matches the work you do. Almost every bad buy in this category is a shop buying from the wrong column.

A production machine in a craft business is money sitting still. A craft machine in a sign shop is something you fight every single day.

Step 2: Pick stepper or servo

This is the most important choice you will make. The motor moves the blade, so the motor decides how neat your cuts are.

A stepper motor moves in small fixed jumps. It costs less. It does a fine job on plain shapes and block letters at normal size. Where it struggles is fine detail, small letters, and long jobs. The jumps set a limit on how fine it can go, and small errors can pile up over a long run.

A digital servo motor checks itself as it goes. It knows where the blade really is, not just where it was told to go, and it fixes itself as it moves. That gives you smoother curves, clean small letters, and cuts that stay straight over a long job. It also holds steady pressure at high speed, which is why servo machines cut faster without getting sloppy.

So here is the rule.

  • Cut small letters, fine detail, or long runs? Buy servo. This matters more than extra width.
  • Cut plain shapes at normal size? A stepper machine will do the job and save you money.

The cheapest way into a servo machine here is the MUSE Servo 24. It is 24 inch wide. If you need the same motor in a wider machine, the MUSE Servo 60 goes to 60 inch.

Step 3: Check how well it tracks

Tracking means keeping the material running straight as it feeds through. On a two foot job you would never notice bad tracking. On a 30 foot fleet lettering job it ruins the whole run.

Three things make tracking good. Look for all three.

  1. Good pinch rollers you can adjust. These are the wheels that hold the material down.
  2. A drive drum with grip all the way across. The rough sandpaper-like surface under the material is what pulls it along.
  3. A pre-feed setting. This runs the material back and forth before it cuts, so the machine learns the path first.

Now the honest part. Most tracking problems are not the machine. They are the setup. Here are the four most common causes.

  • The rollers are sitting outside the gritty part of the drum.
  • One roller is pressing harder than the other.
  • The material was not squared up when it was loaded.
  • Nobody ran the pre-feed.

Step 4: Decide if it has to cut out printed graphics

Skip this step if you do not own a printer.

If you print graphics and then cut them out, the cutter has to find where the print is on the sheet. There are three levels of this, and they are not close in quality.

  • By hand. You line the material up by eye. It works for simple shapes and single pieces. It is slow, and how good it comes out is up to you.
  • Finds one mark. A small light looks for printed marks and the machine adjusts for where the sheet is sitting and how crooked it is. This is the least you should accept for print and cut work.
  • Finds many marks. The machine reads several marks across the sheet. It corrects for position and for the sheet having stretched or shrunk. This is what you need for long panels and tiled jobs.

Two things people do not expect.

Printed material really does change size. It stretches or shrinks between printing and cutting, especially after you laminate it. On long jobs, reading many marks is not a luxury.

Your software has to make the marks your cutter looks for. Check that the software and the cutter work together before you buy either one.

Step 5: Check the force against your heaviest material

Force is how hard the machine can push the blade down. It is measured in grams.

Regular sign vinyl and heat transfer vinyl do not need much. These need a lot more:

  • Reflective sheeting
  • Sandblast mask
  • Magnetic sheet
  • Thick specialty films
  • Window tint

Do this: think of the heaviest thing you will ever cut, check the machine's top force against it, then leave yourself some room. A machine working at the very top of its range cuts badly and chews through blades.

If reflective or sandblast work is in your plans, tell us up front. It rules out a lot of machines.

Step 6: Pick a width

Buy for the vinyl you actually stock, not for the biggest sign you might make one day. A 24 inch machine running 24 inch rolls wastes nothing. A 54 inch machine running 24 inch rolls is a big machine doing small work.

There is one exception. If you own a printer, match the cutter to the printer. A 64 inch printer with a 54 inch cutter means you handle every full width panel twice.

Step 7: Pick your software

Most people spend too little here, and it costs them.

The cutter is just the machine on the end. The software is where you do the work. It is where you design, where your cut lines come from, where weeding lines get added, where shapes get packed together to save vinyl, where the printed marks get made, and where your jobs line up to run one after another.

A good machine with weak software is a weak setup. When a shop hits a wall, the wall is almost always the software.

  • Cutter and a printer. Get RIP Design 26. Do not try to run a wide-format printer on a cut-only version. It will not do it.

The other choices

Flexi is the other serious option and plenty of shops run it well. If you already know Flexi and have a pile of .fs files, staying put is a fair call. Just remember LXi will open those files if you change your mind later.

Mac users, read this before you buy anything. LXi runs on Windows. So does most software in this category. If you are on a Mac, sort out the software before you pick a cutter, not after. Step 8: Order the rest of the gear with it

  • A stand and a media basket. Get these with any machine 24 inch or wider that runs off rolls. With no basket, your cut vinyl drags on the floor.
  • Spare blades, and a spare blade holder. Blades wear out. A dull blade is the number one cause of ragged cuts and vinyl that tears when you weed it. Blades.
  • A spare cutting strip. The strip under the blade gets grooved over time. Here is how to replace it.
  • Weeding tools. You cannot work without them. Weeding tools and cutting tools.

Where to start, by tier

Craft, shirts and small decals

Look at the MUSE ARTisan Good Cutter Package or the Graphtec CE8000-40, a 15 inch desktop machine. The Roland VersaSTUDIO GS2-24 is another good one. Browse desktop cutters and MUSE.

General sign shop, 24 to 30 inch

This is where buying servo gets cheap. The MUSE Servo 24 is a digital servo machine at 24 inch. It comes three ways, and the difference is how much software and material comes with it: Good, Better or Best.

Two add-ons worth getting with it. Add the media basket if you run off rolls. Add the upgraded roller system if you cut long jobs and tracking matters to you.

Ask these eight questions before you buy

Write them down. Take them to whoever is selling you the machine. That includes us.

  1. Is the motor a stepper or a digital servo?
  2. What is the top force in grams, and has anyone actually cut my heaviest material on it?
  3. Can it find printed marks? Not at all, one mark, or many marks?
  4. Which software version comes with it, will it run on my computer, and does it drive this exact model? If it is LXi, is it Expert, Master Plus or RIP Design, and is that the one I need?
  5. Are the stand and media basket included, or extra?
  6. What do I have to keep buying, and what do blades and cutting strips cost?
  7. How long is the warranty, and does it cover labor? See our warranty page.

Almost every complaint about cut quality comes back to one of four things: the blade, the force, the speed, or how the material was loaded. Check these first.
