How to choose vinyl removal tools

Eraser wheels for old vinyl. The MBX Vinyl Zapper air tool and the MBX Ultimate Electric Variomatic spin a notched polymer eraser wheel that peels vinyl and adhesive without heat or paint damage, reaching crevices and curves; the electric version has speed control, a dead-man switch and a vibration-absorbing handle. The Stripe Eliminator fits an air or electric drill and its resilient compound head erases stripes, letters and moulding adhesive with no burning or discolouration.

Adhesive removers. Rapid Remover is non-toxic and water soluble and breaks down adhesive in about sixty seconds without damaging most painted or bare metal, in a 32 oz sprayer or gallon. Orange Peel is a citrus solvent for petroleum, rubber and water-based adhesives, tapes, gum and ink, but not for styrene. Graphix Gone is the milder choice that will not burn most plastics, including Plexiglas, Lexan, styrene and Styrofoam. All three ship ground only.

Plastic blades and scrapers. ScrapeRite plastic razor blades get under lettering and pinstripes without scratching and never rust, sold as a holder with 6 or 25 blades or in 100-blade refills; the 4 in BIG plastic blade covers larger areas. The Lil' Chizler is a bevelled plastic scraper with four rounded corners for metal and acrylic, and the OLFA stainless scrapers in 1 and 2.37 in handle harder residue.

Vehicle prep. The ER-1 emblem removal tool cuts through factory emblem glue and foam with a cord, the fastener and moulding remover set lifts trim without marking the panel, and the Master Ecoheat heat gun gives 500 and 1000 degree settings for softening decals.

Vinyl removal questions

Eraser wheels, adhesive removers, plastic blades and heat.

What is the fastest way to remove old vinyl from a vehicle?

An eraser wheel. The MBX Vinyl Zapper on an air tool or the MBX Ultimate Electric Variomatic spins a 4.13 in notched polymer wheel at up to 3,500 rpm that peels vinyl and adhesive together without heat, smearing or paint damage, including in crevices and on curves. Wheels are replaceable and sold separately.

Which adhesive remover should I use?

Rapid Remover for painted or bare metal: it is non-toxic, water soluble, works in about sixty seconds and wipes off with a plastic squeegee and paper towel. Orange Peel is a citrus solvent for petroleum, rubber and water-based adhesives, tape, gum and ink graffiti, but not styrene, and it should be tested on sealed masonry. Graphix Gone is the mild, non-corrosive option for banners, Plexiglas, Lexan, styrene, Styrofoam and glass.

Will a plastic razor blade scratch paint?

No. ScrapeRite plastic blades have a steep-angle tip that lifts vinyl, pinstriping and adhesive from painted surfaces without scratching, and they never rust. Add the appropriate solvent for stubborn graphics. The 4 in BIG plastic blade and the Lil’ Chizler scraper work the same way over larger areas and on acrylic.

Can I ship Rapid Remover or Orange Peel by air?

No. Rapid Remover, Orange Peel and Graphix Gone ship ground delivery only, and Rapid Remover is not available for sale or use in California.

What removes vehicle emblems and trim?

The ER-1 emblem removal tool draws a cord through the factory glue and foam behind an emblem and comes with 100 cords; the fastener and moulding remover set lifts clips and trim without damaging the surface. A Master Ecoheat heat gun at 500 or 1000 degrees F softens decals and adhesive first.

Do I need a special tool for pinstripes?

The Stripe Eliminator. It attaches to any air or electric drill with universal hardware and its soft compound head erases stripes, letters and decal adhesive with no burning or discolouration; in most cases no secondary clean-up is needed. Replacement wheels are listed here.

Removing old vinyl is a three-step job: lift the film, dissolve the adhesive, then scrape and wipe the residue. The MBX Vinyl Zapper air tool and MBX Ultimate Electric Variomatic spin a notched polymer eraser wheel that peels vinyl and adhesive together without heat or paint damage, and the Stripe Eliminator does the same for stripes and lettering from any air or electric drill.

Orange Peel is a citrus solvent for petroleum, rubber and water-based adhesives, tapes, gum and ink, not for styrene; Graphix Gone is the mild, non-corrosive remover safe on Plexiglas, Lexan, styrene and Styrofoam. All three ship ground only.

ScrapeRite plastic razor blades, the 4 in BIG plastic blade and the Lil’ Chizler lift lettering without scratching paint or acrylic, OLFA stainless scrapers handle harder residue, and the ER-1 emblem tool, fastener and moulding remover set and Master Ecoheat heat gun prepare a vehicle for a new wrap.
