Buying guide

Which car wrap tools do you need?

Knifeless tape. 3M knifeless tape cuts wrap film without a blade touching the paint. Design Line (3.5 mm x 50 m, single roll or case of 20) is the everyday tape, Finish Line (3.5 mm) trims edges, Precision Line (4 mm) cuts fine lines, Tri Line (6 and 9 mm) leaves a gap for inlays, Perf Line is for perforated window film and Bridge Line spans recesses.

Squeegees and gloves. 4 in poly blend squeegees (medium flex, singles or 50 and 100 packs) with felt buffers or low-friction felt sleeves are the basic wrap squeegee; the 3M Gold and Nylon-Plus are nylon reinforced, the WetEdge has a microfiber edge for wet or dry work, and the Master Magic and Flexi-Edge Combo add a roller and a second edge. The Orafol WrapGlove and WrapGlove GHOST turn the hand into a conformable squeegee for ORACAL 970RA, ORAJET prints and ORAGUARD paint protection film.

Fluids. Rapid Prep cleans wax, oil and silicone off paint in 60 seconds before the film goes on. RapidTac is the original vinyl application fluid, RapidTac II is made for calendered, metallic, reflective and polyester films and cold weather, Sure Glide adds an adhesive activator, and Splash is a concentrate that makes a gallon.

Knives, rulers and positioning. OLFA SAC-1 (9 mm, 30 degree blade, stainless), OLFA 180, 300 and L-2 utility knives, Wrap Cut Knife (cuts only the liner so a strip of media holds itself on vehicles that reject magnets), Slice ceramic safety knives and the Vinyl Express slitter. BigBlue safety rulers (28, 40 and 52 in) and Sooper Edge rulers guard fingers; Xtreme Magz magnets (1.58 in, rubber coated, 6 pack) hold graphics in place; the Master Ecoheat heat gun runs 500 and 1000°F at 7 and 9 CFM; a 3 in rivet brush seals film around rivets and the Bubble Popper pen releases trapped air.

Removal. Rapid Remover (non-toxic, water soluble, 60 seconds), Orange Peel citrus remover and Grafix Gone for plastics dissolve adhesive; ScrapeRite plastic blades, the Lil' Chizler and the BIG 4 in plastic razor scrape without scratching; the MBX Vinyl Zapper air tool, MBX Ultimate Electric and drill-mounted Stripe Eliminator erase old vinyl and stripes; the ER-1 cords cut emblems free and the fastener and molding set lifts trim.

Car wrap tool questions, answered

What installers ask us about wrap tools

What tools do I need to wrap a car?

A 4 in squeegee with a felt buffer or a WetEdge squeegee, 3M knifeless tape (Design Line for most cuts, Finish Line for edges), a heat gun such as the Master Ecoheat, positioning magnets or a Wrap Cut Knife to hold the media, a WrapGlove for curves, Rapid Prep to clean the paint, a precision knife such as the OLFA SAC-1 and a rivet brush if the vehicle has rivets. The SignWarehouse Vinyl Tool Kit bundles a felt edge squeegee, precision knife, snap-off knife, weeding tool, tweezers, tape measure and lighted magnifier.

What is knifeless tape and how does it work?

Knifeless tape is a thin filament tape applied to the vehicle before the wrap film. Once the film is laid over it, pulling the filament up through the film cuts a clean line, so no blade touches the paint and inlays and stripes can be cut in place. 3M makes Design Line, Finish Line, Precision Line, Tri Line, Perf Line and Bridge Line for different cuts.

Which 3M knifeless tape should I use?

Design Line (3.5 mm x 50 m) for general cutting and single or multiple layers; Finish Line (3.5 mm) for finishing edges; Precision Line (4 mm) for tight, precise lines; Tri Line (6 mm or 9 mm) when you need a gap between two films for an inlay; Perf Line (3.5 mm) for perforated window film; Bridge Line to carry the cut across a recess. Design Line and Finish Line are sold by the roll, the others by the case.

What is vinyl application fluid for?

Application fluid lets a graphic be positioned and squeegeed wet. RapidTac is the original fluid for vinyl signs and graphics, lets one person install large graphics that would take two dry, and cleans the substrate; RapidTac II is for calendered, metallic, reflective, polyester and mylar films and bonds faster in cold weather and on glass; Sure Glide contains an adhesive activator; Splash is an 8 oz concentrate that makes a gallon. Rapid Prep is the pre-cleaner that removes wax, oil and silicone first.

How do I remove old vinyl and adhesive from a vehicle?

Heat and lift the vinyl, then break down the adhesive with Rapid Remover (non-toxic, water soluble, works in about sixty seconds), Orange Peel citrus remover or Grafix Gone for plastics, and scrape with ScrapeRite plastic blades, a Lil' Chizler or a BIG plastic razor so the paint is not scratched. For fleets, the MBX Vinyl Zapper air tool, the MBX Ultimate Electric Variomatic and the drill-mounted Stripe Eliminator wheel erase vinyl and stripes without heat damage.

Which heat gun is stocked for vinyl wrap?

The Master Ecoheat heat gun: two heat settings at 500 and 1000°F, two fan speeds at 7 and 9 CFM, 120 V and 1200 W, with a built-in hand guard and a light body for holding at any angle during a wrap.

Are squeegees sold in bulk?

Yes. The 4 in poly blend squeegees come singly and in 50 and 100 packs in blue, white and yellow, felt buffers in 5 and 20 packs, 6 in low-friction felt sleeves in 5 packs, and 3M Design Line knifeless tape in a case of 20 rolls.

Car wrap tools are the hand tools, tapes and fluids that turn a roll of wrap film into a finished vehicle. The core kit is a 4 in poly blend squeegee with a felt buffer, 3M knifeless tape for cutting film without a blade on the paint, a heat gun, positioning magnets or a Wrap Cut Knife, a WrapGlove for curves and recesses, and a precision knife and safety ruler for the bench.
