How to choose reflective vinyl
Grade. Reflective sheeting is sold by grade, and the grade sets how much light comes back to the driver and how long the film is rated to last outdoors. ORALITE 5300 and 5400 are 3.5 mil commercial grade for signs that do not have to meet a national standard: parking, property, warning and information signs and cut reflective lettering. ORALITE 5500 (4.25 mil), 5700 engineer grade premium, and our EnduraLITE 8100 and 48000 (6.9 mil) are the workhorses for traffic control, guidance and warning signs. EnduraLITE 15000 super engineer grade (7.5 mil) meets ASTM D4956 Type II. ORALITE 5800 high intensity, 5900 high intensity prismatic, 6700 engineer grade prismatic, 7900 wide observation angle and 9900 brilliant grade are the prismatic films for permanent traffic signs; 5930 is the prismatic construction grade for short to medium term work-zone signs in white, yellow, fluorescent orange and fluorescent yellow-green.
Fleet and vehicles. Cut lettering and stripes on trucks and emergency vehicles use a conformable film: ORALITE 5600 fleet engineer grade (5 mil) in 12 to 60 inch widths, or 5600RA with RapidAir. For printed fleet graphics choose ORALITE 5650RA, EnduraLITE R8512 (6.4 mil Type 1, for solvent and eco-solvent printers), R8512GI with an air egress liner, R8512XP for high resolution work, Arlon DPF 2400 and 2400XLP, or 3M IJ680 and IJ680CR (7 mil, Comply adhesive).
Conspicuity and emergency. ORALITE V82 and V92 Daybright are DOT-C2 certified red and white conspicuity tape in 1, 2 and 3 inch by 50 yard rolls. ORALITE V98 conformable microprismatic sheeting, in solid colors and pre-striped chevron, is made for fire, EMS, police and utility vehicles.
Cut or print. Everything above except the printable films is cut on a vinyl cutter; 15 inch punched rolls are stocked for sprocket-fed cutters. Printed reflective should be paired with an overlaminate for outdoor life. ORALITE 5061 transparent overlay film adds color or protection over white reflective, and 5095 anti-graffiti film protects finished signs.
Widths and lengths. 12, 15 (punched), 24, 30, 36, 48, 54 and 60 inch rolls in 5 to 50 yards; conspicuity tape in 1, 2 and 3 inch by 50 yards. Specifying to a standard? Read ASTM D4956 sheeting types explained, the ORALITE to ASTM type crosswalk and which type your state requires.
Reflective vinyl questions, answered
What is the difference between engineer grade, high intensity and prismatic reflective vinyl?
Engineer grade films such as ORALITE 5500, 5700 and EnduraLITE 8100 and 48000 are the standard for traffic control, guidance and warning signs and for cut reflective lettering. High intensity (ORALITE 5800) and the prismatic films (ORALITE 5900, 6700, 7900 and 9900) return more light to the driver and are specified for permanent outdoor traffic control signage. Commercial grade (ORALITE 5300 and 5400, 3.5 mil) is for signs that do not have to meet a national standard.
Can I cut reflective vinyl on my vinyl cutter?
Yes. ORALITE 5300, 5400, 5500, 5700 and 5800 and EnduraLITE 8100, 15000 and 48000 are made for cut letters, numbers and symbols, and 15 inch punched rolls are stocked for sprocket-fed cutters. For vehicles, ORALITE 5600 fleet engineer grade is the conformable 5 mil film for cut lettering and stripes.
Can you print on reflective vinyl?
Yes, on the printable films: ORALITE 5650RA (15 to 60 inch widths), EnduraLITE R8512, R8512GI and R8512XP for solvent and eco-solvent printers, Arlon DPF 2400 and 2400XLP, and 3M IJ680 and IJ680CR. Pair printed reflective with an overlaminate for outdoor life.
Which reflective vinyl meets ASTM D4956?
EnduraLITE 15000 super engineer grade meets ASTM D4956 Type II and EnduraLITE R8512 is a Type 1 printable film. ORALITE traffic grades are specified by ASTM type on each product page. Our guides explain the sheeting types, the ORALITE crosswalk and state requirements.
What is DOT-C2 conspicuity tape?
Red and white retroreflective tape applied to trailers and commercial vehicles. ORALITE V82 and V92 Daybright are DOT-C2 certified conspicuity sheeting in 1, 2 and 3 inch by 50 yard rolls, in 11 inch red / 7 inch white and 6 inch red / 6 inch white patterns, with kiss-cut options. See what the DOT-C2 regulation requires.
What reflective vinyl is used on fire, police and EMS vehicles?
ORALITE V98 conformable microprismatic graphic sheeting, in solid colors including fluorescent yellow-green and as pre-striped chevron in left and right hand stripes, is designed for fire, EMS, police, utility and telecom vehicles. For cut lettering on fleet vehicles, ORALITE 5600 fleet engineer grade is stocked in 12 to 60 inch widths.
What widths and roll lengths are available?
Sign grades come in 12, 15 (punched), 24, 30, 36, 48, 54 and 60 inch widths and 5, 10, 25 and 50 yard rolls, depending on the film. Conspicuity tape is 1, 2 and 3 inches by 50 yards. Every product page lists the sizes and colors stocked for that film.
