ORACAL 8500 vs. 8800: Choosing Translucent Film for Illuminated Signs

The thing to get right about these two is narrower than it is usually stated, and the honest version is more useful than the confident one.

What ORAFOL actually publishes

8800 is explicitly cast. Its product name is “ORACAL 8800 Translucent Premium Cast,” and ORAFOL lists thermoformed illuminated sign faces under it specifically.

8500’s construction is not stated. ORAFOL renamed it “ORACAL 8500 Translucent High Performance Cal,” and neither the current data sheet nor the product page uses the word “cast” or “calendered” anywhere. The “Cal” suffix implies calendered by ORAFOL’s own naming convention — ORACAL 651 Intermediate Cal is described on its sheet as “Calendered PVC Film” — and that is the reasonable reading. But it is an inference from a naming convention, not a published specification.

And it is muddier than that: an older ORAFOL sheet for the same product was titled “Translucent High Performance CAST.” So ORAFOL’s own literature has said both things at different times.

What this means practically. If the job is a flat illuminated face, the distinction does not change your decision — pick on rated life. If the face is going to be formed, do not rely on an inference: only 8800 is listed for thermoforming, so specify 8800, or get 8500’s construction confirmed by ORAFOL in writing before you commit.

Note that both service temperatures are stated on acrylic rather than aluminium, which is the right substrate for this category and a detail most spec tables get wrong by copying the aluminium figure from a different grade.

The two things that decide it

Thermoforming. ORAFOL lists thermoformed illuminated sign faces under 8800 and does not list them under 8500. If the face is going to be formed, that is the answer, and you do not need to resolve the cast-versus-calendered question to act on it.

How many years the customer is buying. 8500 covers illuminated work to about seven years on colours in the mildest climate zone. 8800 reaches ten on black and white and eight on colours in the same zone. If the sign is a ten-year asset, 8800 is the only grade rated for it.

Read the climate zone row, not just the headline

This is the grade family where ORAFOL’s climate zoning bites hardest, because it publishes all three zones for both films. 8500 drops from 7 years in Zone 1 to 3 years in Zone 3. 8800 metallics drop from 5 years to 1.5. A channel letter set in a high-UV southern market is not getting the number on the front of the data sheet. Quote the zone the sign is actually going to live in.

Choose 8500 for

Flat illuminated sign faces and channel letters · illuminated retail displays · trade show and TV set illuminated work · projects in moderate climates where seven years is enough · anything price-sensitive with a flat face

Choose 8800 for

Any thermoformed or vacuum-formed illuminated face · ten-year channel letter programmes · high-UV and hot-climate installations · national accounts where the sign has to match across regions and the worst-case zone sets the spec

The metallic caution

Both films rate metallics far below their headline figures — 5 years on 8500 in Zone 1 dropping to 3 in Zone 2, and 5 years on 8800 dropping to 1.5 by Zone 3. Illuminated metallic work is the shortest-lived combination in this category. If a design comes back with a metallic in an illuminated face in a hot market, raise it before you quote.
