It's Not An Illusion

Hold up! Did that woman on that sign just wink? Did that face just change, that car just move, that water just make waves? It's fascinating when images seem to move but are stationery, but how does that happen? Two words: lenticular printing.

Lenticular printing from MUTOH

With lenticular printing you, too, can create products that have movement. Make a design really seem to shift as the shirt or other substrate is moved. Or a watch a smile widen or a runner's legs move. The "magic" is actually something you can offer your customers with lenticular printing.

It may be a new term to you, but lenticular printing is a growing technology. Lenticular lenses produce images with an illusion of depth and the ability to change or move as they are viewed from different angles or distances. And once you start to use lenticular printing to make products with this unique feature, you won't want to go back to flat images.

But How Does Lenticular Printing Work?

Lenticular printing is vastly different from other types of printing. It involves printing images on a specially-designed material with a series of ridges (or lenses) called lenticules. These act like tiny magnifying glasses (not the ones your neighbor kid used to set ants on fire). The lenticules allow whomever is looking at image on the shirt or sign or or ad to see changing images depending on the angle from which they look at the image or text.

The process starts with creating multiple images, each representing a different frame of an animation or a different perspective of a scene. These images are then digitally interlaced to create a single composite image. The interlaced image is printed directly onto the lenticular material, aligning each frame or perspective with the corresponding lenticule.

When viewed from different angles, the lenses refract light differently, revealing different parts of the interlaced image. This creates the illusion of movement, depth, or even 3D effects without the need for special glasses.

Lenticular printing is found in advertisements, artistic prints, packaging, promotional materials, and wearables. It adds a striking, memorable, and dynamic element to visual communications. Think of the ways you could use this eye-catching method of advertising with the optical effects of lenticular designs..
