Which adhesive vinyl do you need?

Three questions settle almost every choice:

• How long does it need to last? Indoor and short-term work does not need an eight-year film, and paying for one eats your margin. Outdoor signage and fleet work does.
• What shape is the surface? Flat panels and simple curves are fine on calendered vinyl. Compound curves, deep recesses and rivets need cast.
• Does it have to come off cleanly? That is a removable adhesive, and it is a different product from a permanent film, not a weaker version of one.

Adhesive vinyl comparison

Durability figures are the manufacturer’s rated outdoor life for unprinted film in vertical exposure. Real-world life depends on climate, sun angle, surface prep and whether the graphic is laminated. Permanent vs. removable

The difference is adhesive chemistry, not film quality. A removable adhesive is formulated to release without leaving residue or pulling the surface with it, which is why ORACAL 631 is the standard choice for wall graphics, retail displays and trade-show work. A permanent adhesive builds bond strength over time and is meant to stay.

Two mistakes cost people the most:

• Permanent film on painted drywall. It will very likely take the paint with it. Use 631.
• Removable film outdoors. Weather and UV will beat it. Step up to 651 or, for vehicles, 751.

“Permanent” also does not mean unremovable. Removal just takes heat, patience and usually an adhesive remover.

Cast vs. calendered: the spec that matters most

This is the distinction that decides whether a job survives, and it comes down to how the film is made.

Calendered vinyl is squeezed and stretched through rollers. It is more economical and perfectly good on flat panels and gentle curves, but it carries some internal stress, so over time and in heat it wants to shrink back toward its original shape. On a compound curve or over rivets, that shows up as lifting and tenting. ORACAL 631, 641 and 651, plus EnduraGLOSS and EnduraMATTE, are all calendered.

Cast vinyl is poured as a liquid and cured without stretching, so it is dimensionally stable, thinner and far more conformable. It goes into recesses and around compound curves and stays there. ORACAL 751 and 951 are cast, which is why they are the films specified for vehicle wraps and fleet graphics.

Short version: flat and short-term, buy calendered. Curved or long-term, buy cast. Paying for cast on a flat banner is wasted money; using calendered on a van door is a callback.

Reflective, printable and specialty films

Reflective vinyl is graded by how much light it returns. We carry ORALITE and EnduraLITE across the range: Engineer and Super Engineer grades (ORALITE 5500/5700, EnduraLITE 8100/15000) for municipal and highway signage, Fleet Engineer (ORALITE 5600/5600RA) for vehicle graphics, High Intensity and Prismatic (ORALITE 5800/5900) where maximum brightness is required, and DOT-C2 conspicuity tape (ORALITE V82/V92) for trailer marking. Printable reflective is available too.

If you are printing rather than cutting color, you want printable vinyl. ORAJET and PrismJET media are made for solvent, eco-solvent, latex and UV output.

For everything else, the specialty range covers holographic, chrome, metallic, glitter, carbon fiber, gold leaf, chalkboard, etched glass, glow in the dark, fluorescent, translucent for backlit cabinets and channel letters, and perforated window film for one-way graphics.

What else you will need

• Transfer tape moves weeded lettering from the liner to the surface. Paper tape suits most sign work; clear film lets you see registration. Match tack level to the film: high tack for small, intricate lettering, low or medium tack for large or delicate graphics.
• Application fluid lets you float and reposition a large graphic instead of committing on first contact.
• Squeegees and weeding tools. A felt-edged squeegee will not scratch gloss film, and decent weeders save real time on detailed cuts.
• Color charts. Order the physical chart before a color-critical job. Screens lie.

Common questions

What is the difference between ORACAL 631 and 651?

631 is a removable matte film for indoor and temporary work, rated to lift cleanly for up to two years. 651 is a permanent gloss or matte film rated up to six years outdoors. If it needs to come off a wall, use 631. If it needs to survive weather, use 651.

Which adhesive vinyl works with a Cricut or Silhouette?

All of the films above cut on hobby machines, and ORACAL 631 and 651 are the two most widely used. If you are cutting from a roll wider than your machine accepts, order sheets or a narrower width. For production volume, a commercial vinyl cutter will pay for itself quickly.

Can I put adhesive vinyl on an interior wall?

Yes, with removable film. Use ORACAL 631 on cured, clean, fully dry paint. Fresh paint needs a few weeks to cure or the vinyl will not bond. Avoid permanent film on painted drywall entirely.

Do I always need transfer tape?

For cut lettering and multi-piece designs, yes. It keeps spacing and alignment intact during transfer. For a single large solid shape you can often apply straight from the liner.

Is adhesive vinyl the same as heat transfer vinyl?

No, and they are not interchangeable. Adhesive vinyl has a pressure-sensitive adhesive and goes on hard surfaces: signs, glass, vehicles, tumblers. Heat transfer vinyl bonds to fabric under heat and pressure from a heat press. Apparel needs HTV.

What width and length should I order?

Most films come in widths from 12" to 60" and lengths from 5-yard to 50-yard rolls, plus 12" x 12" sheets for small work. Buy the width closest to your finished graphic, since trimming a 24" roll down for 12" work wastes material. Once a color becomes a repeat order, buy longer rolls; the per-yard cost drops.

How should I store it?

Upright or suspended, never flat under weight, at room temperature and out of direct sun. Rolls stored on end develop flat spots that telegraph into the finished graphic. Storage racks keep inventory usable.
