Let’s start with the thing almost everybody gets wrong.
DOT-C2 is a width, not a brightness
Under FMVSS 108, the numeral tells you how wide the tape is:
- DOT-C2 — sheeting no less than 50 mm (2 inches) wide
- DOT-C3 — no less than 75 mm (3 inches) wide
- DOT-C4 — no less than 100 mm (4 inches) wide
- DOT-C — marks conspicuity reflex reflectors, not sheeting (FMVSS 108 S8.2.2)
The widths and the certification marking are at FMVSS 108 S8.2.1.2 and S8.2.1.3. The letters are the manufacturer’s certification that the material conforms to the standard. A DOT-C4 tape is wider than a DOT-C2 tape. It is not brighter, not higher-grade, and not a premium upgrade. DOT-C2 is what almost everyone stocks because two inches is the standard trailer conspicuity width.
If a customer asks you for “the brighter DOT-C4,” they are asking for a wider tape, and it is worth telling them so. If they actually want a brighter material, that is a Type question — see ASTM D4956 sheeting types explained.
Which vehicles are covered
New trailers — 49 CFR 393.11(b). Trailers at least 2,032 mm (80 inches) wide with a GVWR over 4,536 kg (10,000 lb), manufactured on or after 1 December 1993. Pole trailers and trailers designed for living or office use are excluded.
Truck tractors manufactured on or after 1 July 1997. Note that this date is not in 393.11 — it comes from FMVSS 108 (the requirement historically at S5.7, now carried at S8.2.4), so cite it there rather than to the FMCSA rule.
Older trailers — 49 CFR 393.13. Trailers and semitrailers manufactured before 1 December 1993, at least 80 inches wide, with a GVWR of 4,536 kg (10,001 lb) or more, had a retrofit compliance date of 1 June 2001 — 1 December 2001 for container chassis. Same exclusions, plus driveaway-towaway operations. The threshold wording differs slightly between the two sections: 393.11(b) says “over 10,000 pounds” and 393.13 says “10,001 pounds or more.” Same practical line, different phrasing, and worth quoting correctly per section.
The pattern and placement
From FMVSS 108 and 49 CFR 393.13:
Sides. A strip applied to each side, as horizontal as practicable. It need not be continuous as long as at least half the trailer length is covered. Mounting height between 375 mm and 1,525 mm (15 to 60 inches) above the road surface.
Lower rear. A strip across the full width of the trailer, as horizontal as practicable, within the same height band.
Upper rear corners. Two pairs of white strips, each strip 300 mm (12 inches) long, positioned as close to the top of the trailer as practicable.
Truck tractors. Two pairs of strips, each strip 300 mm long.
Alternating segments. Where alternating red and white material is used, “each white and red segment having a length of 300 ±150 mm” (S8.2.1.4.1.1). And neither colour may represent more than two thirds of the aggregate of any continuous strip marking the width of a trailer (S8.2.1.4.1.2).
Colour allowance expired. Under 49 CFR 393.13(b), retroreflective sheeting or reflex reflectors in colours or colour combinations other than red and white could be used on trailer sides and the lower rear only until 1 June 2009. That is a colour-combination allowance for retrofitted trailers, not a chromaticity tolerance.
A numbering quirk worth knowing
49 CFR 393.11(b) cross-references FMVSS 108 paragraphs S5.7.1, S5.7.2 and S5.7.3. The current text of 49 CFR 571.108 carries the conspicuity requirements at S8.2.x — FMVSS 108 was reorganised and §393.11(b) still points at the legacy numbering.
Cite §393.11(b) as written when citing the FMCSA rule, and cite S8.2.x when quoting FMVSS 108 itself. Photometric requirements for the DOT-C grades are in Table XVI-c of FMVSS 108.
What we stock against this
ORALITE V82 DOT-C2 conspicuity sheeting states that it “fully meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM D4956 Type V sheeting” and “complies with FMVSS 108, DOT-C2,” carrying the DOT-C2 certification mark per 49 CFR 571.108. It is microprismatic — cube-corner elements bonded to a flexible polymeric film with aluminium vacuum deposition — not more than 0.008 inches thick, with an aggressive high-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive. Available white, red, and alternating red/white. ORAFOL publishes a 10-year warranty.
ORALITE V92 Daybright DOT-C2 is also microprismatic with the same thickness and adhesive class, in the same colour options, with a 5-year warranty. Note that ORAFOL’s V92 data sheet states FMVSS 108 and DOT-C2 compliance but does not publish an ASTM D4956 Type designation. V82 and V92 are both metallised microprismatic conspicuity sheeting, so V92 being Type V would be a reasonable inference — but ORAFOL does not publish it, so we do not state it. The V92 sheet online is also dated 2015; ask us for the current revision if you need it for a submittal. Both appear in the ORALITE to ASTM crosswalk.
Application temperature is the practical constraint
Both V82 and V92 require an application temperature of 65°F or above. That rules out a cold-morning retrofit in an unheated yard, which is exactly when fleet maintenance wants to do it. Plan the work, or plan the heat.
