Construction delay warning sign next to a road
Location of signs determine their effectiveness. This sign works best next to a road.

No matter how great a sign you make for a business, it won't do any good if no one sees it. Placement of signs is just as important as the design and style of the sign itself. After all, the point of most signs is to get the general public interested in your business.

While the main purpose of a sign is to spark the curiosity of those who see it and compel them to enter the shop, signs are also used to convey important information, and give a general message regarding the business it represents. Since signs eventually end up decorating a city, many cities have regulations on how and where signs are used.

Signs are most often placed directly outside the business, luring traffic through its doors. They may hang on the wall or glass of the business, or from an awning or pole that protrudes out from the building. Signs are generally lighted, for nighttime visibility and aesthetic pleasure. Some cities allow sandwich board style signs placed on the sidewalk; these can attract a lot of attention and can ultimately increase business.

In addition to one main sign, businesses may choose to set up smaller signs that detail special offers, provide additional information, or serve as an auxiliary advertisement to the main signage of the business. While such signs will keep the same basic feel and design of the main company sign, they do not have to be made of the same variety of materials.

As sign makers we are mainly responsible for creating a quality sign for businesses that communicates! Part of making an effective sign involves knowing how to use the businesses storefront space to best attract potential customers, and comply with local regulations. (Which is a another story!) Make sure you think about the best placement for signs as you are making them, as this will create better results for the businesses for whom you work.
